What Are The Benefits Of Language Learning Through Immersion?

Using the immersion method to learn a language actually has a lot of benefits when compared to other techniques, which is why it is one of the best ways to learn and I will go through some of these reasons below.

Basically it is a very simple method that allows you to acquire the language naturally through a lot listening and reading , which results in you ending up with a very deep understanding of the language.

If you haven’t tried this method, you really should start using it.

(If you need more details on what immersion is, you can read – What Is Learning A Language By Immersion?)

You Are Using The Language As It Should Be Used

Probably one of the biggest benefits of immersion is that you are using the language as it was intended to be used.

Nothing is slowed down or simplified, it’s just how you would hear it normally in its pure form, you are literally interacting with content that natives use.

You also have the added bonus that everything is in context. You are not just learning singular words or concepts; you are getting everything in its complete form.

If you study using a textbook you can think you can understand a lot, only to find that when you speak to a native, you have no idea what is going on, everything seems different and faster and almost like a whole different language …this doesn’t happen when you use immersion as have been dealing with the actual language already.

You Are Acquiring The Language, Not Learning It

Acquiring and learning the language may seem like the same thing, but they really are not. If you are learning the language, then are just picking up pieces here and there and you are basically walking away only knowing what you have learned.

When you acquire the language you actually understand it on a deep level, you actually have general intuition on what is what.

It is far more beneficial to acquire the language as in the long run you will be able to reach a much higher level of understanding.

You Are Working With Your Brains Natural Ability

When we look at how our brains work, they are designed to communicate and decode languages. This is exactly how and why babies are able to pick up languages so quickly and immersion plays to this strength, which is a huge benefit over other methods of learning.

When we immerse we are using subconscious systems to decode the language and this whole process will be far more powerful and efficient than when we try and consciously do it.

All we need to do is just feed our brain the language and it will do the rest for us.

You Are Exposed To So Much More Of The Language

When you immerse in a language you will generally be exposed to a much wider selection of the language. Textbooks and language courses tend to keep things within a very small radius.

They teach you the real common things, or the type of things you might say on a daily basis, and this is fine, but it really is such a small portion of things. If you think of English, if want to just get by, you can probably do so with about 1000 words. However, if you are a native speaker you probably know around 20,000 words, maybe even more.

While it can seem overwhelming to deal with this many words (which is exactly why textbooks try and keep things as small as possible) you will actually benefit from the wider exposure in the long run.

You Will Be Exposed To More Culture When You Immerse

Culture and language are very closely linked and through immersion you will actually get a lot of exposure to both.

To immerse in the language you need to interact with a lot of movies, TV, podcasts, music books and general videos on YouTube. These are all actually forms of culture and getting into this is only going to expand your culture knowledge and understanding.

This is often missed from textbooks, where they tend to just focus on the mechanic of how the language works, such as grammar. This can be very useful, but really you also need that cultural immersion too, which you will get from immersion.

Immersion Is A Less Stressful Way To Learn

In general, immersion is pretty stress free. You just have to spend time with the language and enjoy yourself. Of course it can be a little stressful trying to understand things and feeling lost, but this is quite different from the stress of having to study in more traditional ways.

When you do more classroom type study the language is staggered in a way that you need to understand what has come before to progress. You are taught one thing, and you need to understand that before you can do the next lesson. The problem comes when you don’t understand something and you struggle to move on, which can be stressful.

Then if you include tests, then this is a whole new level of stress. You need to remember things and be prepared …which is just something you don’t need in your life.

Immersion just allows you to go at your own pace and things will fall into place when they fall into place, the whole approach is much more relaxed.

You Can Study By Yourself If You Are Using Immersion

Immersion also has the benefit of allowing you to study on your own. You just need to watch TV shows and look up words as you go. You don’t need anyone explaining anything to you and teaching you the language.

Of course as you progress you could do some lessons and have someone explain the grammar to you, but really you can get really far without this. So long as you have access to the internet you can uncover the language by yourself.

You Can Study With Material That You Find Interesting

One of my favourite parts about immersion is that you have control of the material. You can watch and read whatever you are interested in.

This doesn’t happen when you do a course as they curate all the material for you and decide the topics. This then results in your having to study something extremely boring, such as the colours. I know this is an important topic …but it’s boring.

You can still learn this topic when you immerse, but it will be through something you are actually interested in.

Being able to do this has the added benefit of making the whole method more engaging, so you can actually study for longer and are less likely to give up, since you are actually enjoying the material.

Conclusion

As you can now see there are many benefits to learning a language through immersion.

It really is one of the best ways to learn and if you are currently learning a language without immersion, then you are missing out on all these benefits and I would strongly suggest that you start adding in some immersion to your studies, it really will help you make progress in your language.
