今日は日常英語の慣用句を説明します。これらはよく耳にする言葉なので、覚えておきましょう

What Is An Idiom?

Idioms are very interesting part of English. They are commonly used phrases that look like one thing, but mean something completely differently.

Basically you cannot take them literally and this is why it is important to know them, as you might hear someone talking and totally misunderstand what they are saying.

The ones below are pretty common and you will hear natives using them all the time in daily conversation. My video explains how they are used and what they actually mean.

Example Sentences -例文

-I was speaking to john and he was feeling under the weather so he might not come to the party tonight.

-What happened at the party last night? Was John there? Spill the beans, I want to know what happened!

-I had my yearly review at work today, it was a piece of cake. My manager was happy with me he said I am always on the ball.  I don’t think johns review went well, he is on thin ice. The manager actually told me thinks he is a pain in the neck as he is always doing thing the wrong way.

– I was talking to john the other day about his work, and in a in a nutshell he thinks he hates his job.  I asked him what he is going to do and he was really sitting on the fence about it. Part of him wants to stay and see if things improve and part of him wants to go and get a different job.  I told him it would be better to hang in there for a while longer to see what happens, as this is easier than looking for a new job.

-Did you hear about john, he kicked the bucket.  I think he had a heart attack in work.
