The Importance Of Learning English – Why You Need This Language Over Others

If someone you know is thinking about learning English, you need to tell them to hurry up and start.

It will be one of the best things they will ever do. I am not trying to say that it is the best language to learn, but I am saying that the benefits of knowing this language are huge and you will be limiting yourself if you decided on something else.

I wouldn’t normally recommend a specific language to learn, but I am a little biased with this one. As a native English speaker I would encourage anyone who can’t speak English to do everything in their power to try and learn it. You will thank yourself later.

English Is The International Language

England many only be a relatively small island, but you can’t deny that that the English language is the international language. More people in the world speak English than any other language, with over 2 billion people estimated to able to speak it.

Although, this is number is not made up of only native English speakers, it also includes people who have learned it as a second language which is why it’s such a big number.

However, there are still a lot of native English speakers around the world. There are 55 sovereign states and 27 non-sovereign entities around the world where English is listed as an official language and there is believed to be around 379 million native language speakers worldwide.

This all means that pretty much anywhere you go on this planet, you are probably going to hear English.

Learning English Makes Travelling Easier

Travelling around the world is everyone’s dream, but it can be quite scary to go somewhere where no one speaks the same language as you.

Luckily since English is the most common language spoken around the world you shouldn’t have a problem. No matter where you are, just try and speak English, someone there will probably speak it too.

As someone who has traveled, but had not discovered learning languages yet, I would often find myself in countries where I could at best say “hello” and “thank you” in the local language.

However it didn’t matter, I just belligerently spoke English and smiled and guess what, it never failed.

In the tourist areas it was impressive. There was perfect English everywhere I turned.

I even remember seeing two non-English speakers (maybe a German and Spaniard) both talking to each other in English.

When I went away from the tourist areas, the English was not so good, maybe a few words and some hand gestures, but I could still get by.

So if you want to do a lot of travelling, learn English. It will definitely make your life easier no matter where you go.

English Is The Language Of The Internet

It is also not the just the real world where English is the most spoken language, it is also the main language of the internet. Of course the internet is in pretty much every language, but English is the most prevalent.

This will of course be a direct result from English being the most common language spoken in the real world, so it is no real surprise.

However, it does mean that most websites and content in general is aimed at speakers of English. It can be easy to translate this, but if you can speak the language your experience will just be a lot easier and faster.

English Offers You More Entertainment

Every country has its own media and entertainment, but let’s be honest the amount that comes from English speaking countries is just insane. (Hollywood I’m looking at you)

Most countries around the world end up watching movies and TV shows that come from America. They are usually dubbed or subtitled for these countries, but if you learn English, you can watch them all as intended in the original form.

I think most countries get a lot of the English content that is produced, but they don’t get everything. When you learn English you can enjoy everything that is on offer.

English is also one of the most common languages that songs are sung in. If you go to any country, there will be a popular song from there, yet they will always somehow sing a few lines of the song in English. I never really understood why this happens, but it defiantly does.

The same can be said for the news media around the world, English is the most common language that the news is reported in.

Basically if you want to be entertained, knowing English will help with this.

Packaging Is Always In English

Have you ever noticed a lot product packaging around the world will be in English? Go in to any shop, in any country and you will find items where there is English on the packaging.

Maybe it’s just a brand slogan, or maybe it’s the ingredient list or instructions on the back, but it will be there in some way.

English is always somehow squeezed on to a lot of products packaging. Not all of them, but a lot.

As I’ve already said, English is the most spoken language, so if you are selling your products worldwide it makes sense to include some English into the packaging.

If you are outside of an English speaking country right now, go into your bathroom or kitchen and start looking at the packaging, you will be amazed at how much English you can find written on things!

Knowing English Will Get You A Better Job

If you want to work worldwide, English is the language to know. It is the language of business and the global work force.

Most international companies will want you to be able to speak two languages, of which one is usually English.

Being able to say you can speak English is going to open your job opportunities around the world. If you want to work internationally, English is simply a must.

English Is An Easy Language To Learn

Every non-English speaker I have spoke to has told me I am super lucky to be an English speaker …then they always follow it up with “you are going to find learning X Language really hard compared to English”.

I don’t know why, but everyone I have met just thinks English is easier to learn than their own language. While I can’t prove this, I do think it is interesting I have heard it said so many times.

You will also find that if you speak to any English speaker about anyone from any other country, who has learned English as a second language they will all say something like “well of course they can speak two languages, English is so easy to learn compared to their native language”.

There is just a general consensus that English is easy to learn. Everyone seems to think this, but I am not sure how true this is.

I think all languages are equal in difficulty to learn and it’s actually all dependent on the individual’s native language and how it compares to what they are trying to learn.

Although maybe English is just easier, who knows.

Conclusion

English is a great language and learning it has huge advantages no matter where in the world you live.

I’m hoping that you can already speak it if you are reading this article, but if not I would highly suggest you start learning. You will not regret it.
