The Extra Benefits Of Learning A Language

Learning a new language can be a lot fun and very rewarding. It comes with the obvious benefit of now being able to communicate and understand a whole new language, but it can give you so much more than that.

Being able to speak to people and understand things is usually the main reason we want to learn a language but I will go through all the extra benefits you will experience too. If you ever needed an other reason to learn a language, these should definitely convince you that its a good idea

Learning A Language Makes You Happy

Learning a language will just simple make you happy. It’s a fun hobby and the enjoyment we get is why a lot of us do it.

We all know it can suck at times and it can be a real struggle, but overall there is something very rewarding about slowly being able to understand another language.

When you stop to look back at how far you have come, it’s going to put a smile on your face. It’s this feeling of achievement is that we get addicted to and why we keep learning languages.

Learning A Language Is Good For Your Brain

Language learning can actually benefit the physical health of your brain. Studies have shown that people who learn a second language are more likely to have delays in the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Basically learning a language keeps your brain stronger and sharper for longer and it’s therefore less likely to decline as you age.

Your brain is like a muscle, the more you use it, the strong it will become. If you keep learning as you age you will keep that mental muscle strong!

You Will Get A Lot Of Personal Growth From Learning A Language

Learning a new language can open a lot of doors, but it can also open up a lot about yourself.  You might not believe it, but you will probably grow as a person when you study a new language.

There is a real discipline needed to sit down and study something repeatedly for months at a time, for no reason other than you want to.

You will really start to learn about organisation, discipline, patience, self motivation and determination and you will develop all these skills over time.

You will also start to learn about how you actually learn and what methods and techniques are the most effective for you.

You will also end up looking at your own language and have your eyes open to how badly you speak. This will usually end up with you actually getting better at your own language, even if you didn’t set out to do this.

I really do feel like a better, stronger person all round since learning languages.

Learning A Language Can Give You Career Opportunities

For some, learning a new language can transfer into a new career.

Some people will move to a country that speaks their target language and they will be able to work and live their dream life there.

Others may end up getting a job that needs them to have both languages and for some, they end up using the skill they have invested in, to help others learn by becoming teachers or tutors.

The world is getting smaller everyday and being able to communicate in multiple languages is always going to be an advantage in business.

You may be learning with no intentions of working with your language, but you never know where you may end up, and to have this option is priceless.

You Will Make New Friends After Learning A Language

This is maybe my favourite benefit of learning a new language.

The second you get comfortable talking to natives is the second that you open the floodgates to a whole new world of friends.

I’m sure there are millions of people who can be your friend in your native language, but there is something really special about making friends with someone in a different language.

I know some people have gone beyond friends and actually found love. It might seem impossible when you are pulling your hair out in frustration while reading your grammar book, but for some people, it can lead to love.

Learning A Language Will Bring You New Cultures

Learning a new language is going to expose you to a whole new culture.

This may be as simple as now being able to enjoy the music, TV and cinema in your target language or it can go so much deeper than this and be reflected into every aspect of your daily life.

Being able to understand the language is going to give you a real insight into things like the social norms, humour, food and interpersonal relationships.

Learning a language is so much more than being able to just translate words, it can be a whole way of life.

Conclusion

Language learning is worth the hardship, while the reward of being able to communicate is worth it alone, the extra benefits are just amazing.

When you start to consider these extra benefits it just shows you how learning a language can really be life changing and very fulfilling.

I know it’s hard, but just don’t give up. Keep going and you will get there. You will get to enjoy the fruits of your labour soon enough and it will all be worth it.
