Example Sentences -例文
The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. It is when there is the least daylight.
This is because the earth axis has moved away from the sun. This movement is why we have winter and summer.
The winter solstice is the most extreme point of this movement and after this, it will start to tilt back the other way until it become summer.
This happens on the 21st of December for the northern hemisphere and the 21st June for the southern hemisphere.
This used to be an important day for many cultures in the past, such as the Neolithic period. We have found many old sites, such as Stonehenge that seem to be linked to this day. The stones line up exactly with where the sun will rise on the winter and summer solstices. It seems they understood that this was a significant date for the earth.
