Soft drinks are things you can drink at any time and are usually served cold. The most common is water but juice is also very popular.
An unhealthy option is soda and fizzy drinks, which are full of sugar, but also very tasty. The vending machines in Japan have a lot of cold tea and coffee which are also soft drinks. You can also get sorts drinks and energy drinks, which can help you stay hydrated, but often these have a lot of sugar in them too.
You can also drink milk and you can use this to make a delicious milk shake. Smoothies are similar, but usually just contain fruit, but each recipe is different.
Some soft drinks can be served hot and of course the most popular are tea and coffee. There really are so many different types of these two drinks. You can also get hot chocolate, which is so delicious. It is warm milk and chocolate and it is great to drink on a cold winter’s day.
The opposite of a soft drink, is a hard drink …which means alcohol.
These can only be drank by adults and you can’t drink too much of them as it is not healthy.
Beer and wine are very popular alcoholic drinks and you can also get cider. In the UK, cider is always alcoholic, but in Japan you can get both hard and soft ciders, which of course means one has alcohol and one does not.
Another popular, but very strong type of alcohol is spirits. These are going to be things like vodka, whisky and gin.
