There are many different types of instruments, but some can be quite similar and they are often grouped together because of this.
If you are in a Rock band you will usually have guitars, either electric or autistic or bass, as well as a drum kit and maybe a keyboard too.
A keyboard is an electric version of a piano, so they are much cheaper.
You probably played an instrument at school and you would have been part of the brass, wind or strings instruments.
Brass instruments are things like trumpets, the French horn and the trombone. They are played with your mouth, but they are made from brass.
The wind instruments are also played with your mouth, and are things like the flute, oboe, clarinet and saxophone.
The strings instruments are played with your hands and things like the violin, double bass and harp.
There are also percussion instruments, which are things like bells, cow bell, the triangle, maracas and a Gong.
Some other interesting instruments are the harmonica, didgeridoo and kazoo, which are all played by your mouth.
