Example Sentences -例文

You are going to find all sorts of different tools in a kitchen, which will help you cook your meals.

Something you can cook your food in is a sauce pan or frying pan. Usually a sauce pan has taller sides, so that it can hold liquid and a frying pan is shallower, as it only needs small bit of oil to cook the food.

You are also going to find a knife, and a chopping board to cut your food. You can get many different types and styles of knives, which are all used for cutting and slicing different things. So long as you have one sharp one, you will be fine.  You can also get different types of chopping boards; usually they are different colours so you can use them for different things, such as one for raw meat and a different one for vegetables.

You might also have scissors which can be used to cut things. Sometimes this is food, but I usually these to cut the packaging open.

You might also have a cheese grater, which you can “cut” cheese with, well you can grate it into little pieces. You can of course use this to grate anything. I also use it to grate vegetables for soups so the pieces are very small.

When you are cooking food in a pan, it will be hot so you can not touch it and you will need some tools to help you so that you do not burn your hands.

You can use a wooden spoon or spatula to stir things, or mix them around in your pan. In Japan, I think it is more common to use a pair of chop stick to do this, but you could also use a pair of tongs. If the item is quite heavy, like a bit steak, a pair of tongs can be very helpful.

Once your food is ready to serve, you will need to get it out of the pot and while the tools I  have mentioned already can do this job, sometimes it is just easier to use something like a big spoon, or a strainer, which can make the whole process of getting the food out much easier.

If you are serving meat, especially a large joint of meat, you might need a carving fork and a large knife to cut slices. The carving fork just allows you to hold the meat steady as you cut it, since it will be too hot to touch it with your hands.

Some kitchens might have a pasta machine, which will allow you to make pasta, or noodles for your ramen. Most people just buy these already made from the shop, but if you have a pasta machine, you can make it yourself.

You can make pasta without a pasta machine, but you will need a rolling pin, which is a heavy, round piece of wood that you can use to roll your pasta out and make it very thin before you cut it. This takes a lot more work, but it is how it was done many years ago.

You might also have a whisk, which is something you use to mix things together. This works very well for wet ingredients, such as whisking an egg into some flour, when making a cake.

If you eat a lot of potatoes, you might have a masher, which is used to mash, or crush potatoes (or other vegetables) after they are cooked. I use this tool a lot.

You are going to serve your food on a plate, or bowl, and this is what you use to hold your food while you eat it at the table.
