Today is a very short and simple lesson, but it’s still worth knowing.
一番(いちばん)In Japanese
We are looking 一番(いちばん) (ichiban), which means “the most” or “the best”.
This is used when you are talking about something you think is “the best” or “most”, which when you look at the kanji, it helps explain what this means.
The kanji is made up the character for 1, 一 and the character for number 番.So it literally translates as “number one” …or another way of saying that is …the best, or the most of something.
It can also be used to mean your “favourite” which if you think about it, is going to be something you rank at number 1, or you think “is the best” …so you can see how it could also mean “favourite” in some contexts.
You will hear this being used in your immersion and you might automatically here the ichi part and think they are talking about a number, I guess if you did see it as “number 1” you would still understand what is going on, but it is worth looking out for and realising they are talking about “the best” as such.
So it really is that simple, just look out for this.
