How Learning A Language Will Make You A Better Person

Learning a new language has the obvious advantage of giving you the skill of a new language, but you will actually gain so much more.

Learning a new language will change you in a number of ways. It will make you a better person overall and I will go through exactly how it does that.

You Will Become A Clearer Communicator If You Learn Another Language

Language is of course the king of communication and being able to speak more than one language shows you have a better ability to communicate.

However, this isn’t all it helps with.

Speaking Your Own Language To Non-Native Speakers

When you meet someone who is trying to learn your language you will instantly know what it is like for them. You have been in their shoes. Having had this experience yourself gives you such a unique perspective of what they are going through and what help they need.

I am a native English speaker and if anyone learning English speaks to me, I instantly change how I am talking.

I slow down, I try and tone my accent down and speak more clearly. I start using simpler language and less slang.

This may sound like its being patronising, but you can quickly judge some ones skill level and you can adjust how much you do these things accordingly.

Some people I can just speak normally and they fully understand, but the point is that I am aware they are learning and I try to help them by making it easier for them.

When learning a new language this is exactly what I would want to happen when I’m talking to someone, as I just don’t have the skills to listen to full speed native speak in a language I am still learning.

Having learned a language yourself you just become more considerate to other learners. you will just be an all round more open person and much more helpful and caring towards other language learners.

Communication In Your Own Language Will Improve

I have also found that learning a second language has also helped with my communication between my fellow natives. To learn a new language I had to spend some time studying my own language so I could compare how they differ and I would recommend you do the same.

I now have a better understanding of English grammar and I have noticed a lot of little interesting details and nuances that I was totally unaware of which have made me better at speaking English.

This has also been able to make help English learners better as well. I am now better able to explain things and answer some of the common questions they have about certain things they ask about Engish.

You Appreciate Different Cultures If You Learn A Language

Learning a new language also gives you the keys to new cultures. Language and culture are usually very intertwined and as soon as you learn one, the other will automatically make a lot more sense.

Learning a new language can really help you appreciate why certain cultures do things a certain way and can really help you appreciate the differences from your own country.

Understanding these differences can also massively help you appreciate other people’s views and perceptions of the world.

When you are able to do this, it will make you such a better person. You will become more open minded and appreciate that it’s okay to be different and you can really enjoy that this is actually what makes the world such an amazing place.

Learning A Language Will Increase Your Confidence

Being able to speak in a different language is something to be proud of and when you are able to actually use your language in real life it is going to feel great.

Possessing this type of skill will increase your confidence in general.

However, even when you are learning, you will still gain some confidence. Most of you reading this will have decided to learn a language yourself (you haven’t been asked to do it).

As you progress and see your abilities grow, you will start to gain more confidence. You will gain both confidence in your language skills and confidence in yourself.

You will start to see how the decision you made to start learning are now showing results.

You can see and feel that you are making a positive impact on your own life and developing yourself. This can give you a massive sense of achievement and confidence that you can go on to do anything you set your mind to.

Learning A Language Will Make You Better At Studying In General

Taking on the huge task of learning a language will make you become better at studying in general.

Making the choice to do something like this and carrying it out is a massive task on its own.

Trying to organise what to study and when will take a lot of effort. Also working out what is the most effective way for you to learn something will also take some trial and error but learning a language will basically show you how your own brain works and what the most efficient process is for you.

After learning a language for a while you will start to get good at knowing what is effective or not. You will start to understand what works for you. You will see what techniques and styles of learning are most effective.

Being be able to understand what techniques work best for you is a huge game changer as it is easily transferable to anything else you want to learn in the future.

Knowing what way you learn and knowing how to be an effective learner will also allow you to have a clearer mental focus which you can also bring to any other aspect of your life.

You will also be more organised. Language learning takes a lot of time management and resource management.  Like I have already said, it’s a huge task and you will get some great experience from organising and managing your language learning.

These skills can be easily transferred to any other future project you take on in your life.

Learning A Language Is Good For Your Brain Health

Learning a language literally changes your brain. It actually makes it stronger.

Memories are created when the brain forms physical pathways between neurons and synapses. Studies have shown that learning a language creates more of these pathways.

As you practice these pathways become stronger and stronger. This is why after enough practice you can remember things much clearer and stronger. In the beginning the pathways are weak but as you practice they solidify and become stronger.

Learning a language literally makes our brain stronger.

Studies have shown that people who speak more than one language will have a lot more of these pathways than those who do not know another language. This extra strength has also been show to help slow down the onset of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

You brain will become stronger and healthier from learning.

You also now have the possibility to meet and interact with millions of new people. This is one of my favourite things about knowing a second language. I have made so many new friends as I can now communicate with more people. Some people are even lucky enough to find a lover.

Having friends around the world who speak totally different languages is just one of the best things in life.
