Writing in a second language is often seen as quite a hard skill where you need to master everything else first before really attempting it.
However, putting some effort into your writing ability can actually improve your overall skill level in the language, so it is something you should be focusing on a lot earlier than you might think.
Writing is a tough skill, but it is worth your time and I will go through some ways it can help improve your overall language skills.

Writing Is A Form Of Output
Writing is a form of output, which means you don’t actually learn anything new. Most people see this as a negative, but it is actually really important and still very beneficial for your overall language skills.
Writing is a great to practice what you already know and really consolidating your knowledge. Every time you write you will be firming up that knowledge and making it stronger and stronger.
This can really help you build a strong foundation, which can allow you to build more of the language on top of this, so you really can not underestimate or undervalue the power of writing, it will help you increase your language skills overall, even if it is seen as just a form of ‘practice’.

Writing Will Improve Your Ability To Think In The Language
One of the best things about writing is that it is going to force you to actually think in the language. You need to think about what you want to say and formulate the right words and sentence structure to make this happen.
This can be tough at first, but the more you write, the better you will become at this, and the faster you will be able to do. This is of course great for your writing ability, but this speed at being able to process the language will actually transfer over into other areas of your language, such as speaking and listening.
You will find that writing indirectly helps these areas as you are just more comfortable with processing the language in your mind overall.
Writing Pushes You To Test Your Active Vocabulary
Writing is really going to push you to use your vocabulary and like I discussed at the start, this is going to strengthen your overall knowledge.
Initially you may struggle to recall a word and it can be extremely frustrating, but the more you do this, the more that word will become easier to recall and the faster you will be able to recognise the word if you see it elsewhere.
Writing can really help you move words across from your passive vocabulary into your active vocabulary, which generally means your overall skill level is increasing. Words you used to be able to sort of recognise are now words you can instantly summon from your mind with ease.

Writing Pushes You To Test Your Grammar Skills
When it comes to writing …you need grammar.
Writing is going to be one of the best ways to test and improve your grammar. Everything needs to be correct and you can’t get away with any little mistakes in the same way you can when you are speaking.
When you write, your grammar is on display for everyone to see in black and white, so it can be a stressful thing to do, but it is in this discomfort where you learn the most.
You can then take this increase in grammar ability from writing and transfer it over to your speaking skills and just generally increase your overall ability from the practice you do with writing.

Writing Will Instantly Show You Your Weaknesses
Writing is also going to instantly point out your weaknesses.
If you go to write something and don’t know the word or proper grammar to make that happen …this is now something you can go away and learn. This is a very easy way to quickly increase your knowledge with information you actually need and are likely to use.
It can be annoying when it happens, since you want to write whatever it is, but this is fine. Use it a learning tool and it will actually help your over all language skills increase.
Writing Allows You To Learn Through Doing
While I am a big fan of learning passively through immersion, there is something very powerful about actually ‘learning through doing’ and nothing is better at this then writing in your language.
You are going to have to formulate a sentence and get the right words and grammar as well a spell everything correctly. When you first do this, you will realise you are not as good in the language as you might have thought and it can be a very humbling experience.
As I have already mentioned, writing will show you the weaknesses you have and it will also allow you to consolidate what you already know.
Actually just using the language through writing is a great way to learn and improve your overall ability in an active way.

Writing Will Improve Your Confidence In The Language
Writing in a new language is tough, but once you start getting the hang of it and can actually see that you can produce the language on your own, it can really build your confidence.
Sometimes learning a language can feel like you are dizzy, so many different things are zipping through your head and your native language will be getting in the way too, so to be able to just sit down and write something and squeeze everything out and onto a page can be a very important experience.
You can sit back after and look at what you have produced and see that you do actually have some knowledge in the language. This little boost in confidence can be priceless and can really encourage you to keep battling on and make you believe that you can actually learn the language you are trying to learn.

Writing Can Improve Your Speaking Ability
Writing a lot can actually improve your ability to speak. If you look at writing and speaking, they are pretty similar. Both skills require you to conjure up coherent thoughts and structure them in a way that make sense through remembering words and using correct grammar.
The only difference is that you can take your time with writing, but once you get comfortable with this, you can speed up the pace, which is exactly what is required for speaking, so writing is a very good pathway to help you get better at speaking.
Conclusion
Hopefully now you can see that writing is a very powerful way of increasing your overall ability in your language.
I would still suggest you focus on immersion at first and get a good base understanding knowledge of the language, but when things are starting to make sense, it can be very beneficial to start writing.
It really can help with your overall ability in the language, so you should not ignore it.
