Can You Learn A Language Without Writing?

Writing is often seen as long winded and boring, so it’s common to hear people asking if they can skip this part.

The truth is you can, but only for a while. You don’t need writing to learn a language as you can do this through reading and listening. However, if you want to actually get good at a language and be able to use it for yourself, which is usually what we want, then writing will be needed.

Writing can play a huge part in your ability to master a language, and to learn a language without it would ultimately affect you negatively in the long run.

Input Is More Important Than Writing

The good news is that input is more important than output when it comes to initially leaning a language, which means you could avoid writing for a while and still make progress.

To actually write something, you first need to have some knowledge of the language, which is why input is more important. You need to listen and read things to learn the language. You have to do this first or you will never be able to write.

While you can avoid writing, I really would not recommend this as a long term plan, you can gain so much from writing and you need to be doing it at some point.

You Will Miss Out On The Benefits

You cannot avoid writing forever, you need to do it if you want to make real progress and really get into the advanced levels of your new language.

We probably do not write much in our own language, so maybe we feel it’s not important, however, for a language we are learning it is fantastic practice and really should be encouraged.

If you are not writing, you are missing out on the many benefits it can give you.

Writing Helps Your Memory

Writing is going to actively force you into using your memory. You need to recall the words you know in order to write them down. This can be difficult at first, but the more times you do it, the easier it gets, your memory literally becomes stronger and faster the more you write.

This is exactly how you become comfortable with a language, now instead of having to sit and think about a word, it will just flow out.

Writing Improves Your Spelling

Spelling may not be that important if you don’t want to write, but you will become stronger in a language if you actually focus on this.

Knowing how to spell a word means you can remember it better and you will recognise it faster when reading.

Writing is going to make sure you get plenty of practice with your spelling, in turn making your overall language skills better.

Writing Helps You Think In The Language

You are going to find writing and the language in general a lot easier if you can think in the language as you use it.

Thinking in a language is extremely important and can really increase the speed at which you learn and improve. If you are translating back and forth in your head this can really get in the way and while you will need to this at the start, it is mostly a hindrance.

Thinking in the language is hard, but it gets easier with practice and this skill will make what you learn and how you practice it more efficient.

Thinking will improve your writing ability, but writing will also improve your ability to think, so to avoid writing is only going to slow how quickly you can think in a language, which in turn is going to affect the other areas of your learning.

Writing Helps You Read

Reading is closely linked to writing and basically the more you read, the more you will be able to learn. Reading is an input activity, so it’s really important and you need this to learn the language, reading is where you discover new words and phrases.

You could argue that the more you read, the better you will get at reading, which is true. However, writing will have this effect too. Writing makes you process how to order words in a natural way and how to spell them yourself, then when you read them in a book your whole understanding and processing becomes easier and faster.

You can’t avoid writing, you need it to improve you reading skills and as I just said, the better you are at reading, the more you will actually learn.

You Will Need Writing To Communicate

Writing is a large part of communication which is why you can’t learn a language without it.

You could argue that the best form of communication is speech, but you really can’t ignore that a large part of modern communication is done through writing, such as text messages, email and social media.

To try and learn a language without writing is really going to hinder you. You will not be able to function in the modern world and you will not be able to communicate properly.

Most language exchanges start through writing, so really if you want to make friends with natives to practice speaking with, you are going to have to write to them initially.

Focus On All Areas Of Language

Will writing is important it should not be avoided as you will struggle to fully learn a language without it.

However, the same can also be said about the other areas of language learning, such as reading, listening and speaking. You really need to focus on everything as they are all interlinked and all play their part in you reaching fluency.
