When it comes to learning a language, most people want to avoid speaking, but can you actually do this?
Honestly, you can, but it’s really not perfect and you will need to eventually start talking if you want to really improve in the language you are learning.

Input Is More Important For Language Learning
When you are starting to learn a new language your input will be far more import than your output.
This means focusing on listening and reading. This is where you are going to actually get your knowledge from and begin to understand the language and piece it all together.

Speaking is not really important at this stage and if you wanted to avoid it, you totally could.
However, you cannot put it off for ever. At some point you will need to start speaking. This is both for the benefits it can bring you and so that you can actually communicate.

People Can Learn Languages Without Speaking
I think it is also important that realise that while speaking is important, there are instances of people learning a language and never speaking it, so while it’s not ideal to avoid it, you can still have success.
Dead Languages
Dead languages are ones that are no longer spoken in daily life. There are no native speakers, so really we can only learn these languages through text. For a number of these languages we are not even sure exactly how they sounded, since we have not actually heard any one speaking them.
You will find a lot of people who study these languages do not really speak them and their understanding is more based around reading.

Deaf People
I will be honest, I’m not an expert in this area, but my understanding is that many deaf people are able to learn a language and never actually speak it, and probably were also not able to hear it when they acquired the language.
It’s pretty incredible, but shows that you do not need to speak to be able to learn a language. Of course they use sign language, which is a whole different world of language learning that fascinates me.
I think spoken languages are pretty intense, but sign languages are just a whole other level, it is extremely impressive that people can communicate this way.
You Need Speech To Communicate
The biggest problem with not speaking is that you cannot communicate with people. You could argue that it can all be done through text, which is true, but it really not the same.
Speech is by far the best form of communication and it is why you cannot avoid it forever. Without it you are never going to progress to the highest levels of the language.
I know I just said deaf people and dead languages don’t speak, but the difference is that deaf people just communicate in a different way, through sign language and dead languages are not used for communication.
Dead languages are more of an academic language where students may talk about how the language works in English for example, rather than using the language as a form of communication.

You Won’t Have Good Pronunciation
Speaking is also the key to pronunciation. You can often get the sounds right in your head, but if you want to be able to produce them yourself, you need to be speaking.
Your mouth will not be used to producing the sounds and the only way you can train this is to actually speak out loud.
Even if you have a very strong understanding of the language, the only way you can get good at pronouncing is from practice.
You could argue that if you don’t want to speak, then pronunciation doesn’t matter, which I guess is true. However, if one day you did decide to speak, you would sound awful, so just practice it.

There Are Benefits To Speaking
Avoiding speaking may seem like the best option at times, but it doesn’t matter if you hate it, you need to do it. It is actually better for you to speak than to avoid it.
Speaking will benefit your language skills. It is great practice and it is going to allow you to really solidify what you have already learned.
Speaking forces you to recall words so you are going to make them stronger in your memory by using them often and you are also going to speed up you processing times as you get used to doing this.
This means that the more you speak, the better you will get at your language.
Those long pauses and struggles to remember a word will decrease and you will actually get better. This is why you can’t avoid speaking, it’s too beneficial to ignore.

Focus On All Areas Of The Language
While you can avoid speaking a language for a while, the reality is that speaking is important and you need it to progress.
However, you also need to focus on the other areas of language learning too. Listening, reading and even writing are all equally as important and if you want to make the best progress then you need to make sure you have all four areas covered.
As I said before, you can initially focus more on the input side of things, through reading and listening, but eventually you will need to output the language too, which means speaking and writing.
Making sure you focus on everything is going to ensure you are strong overall in the language and it is worth the effort to do this. Avoid areas like speaking is only going to slow your progress down.
