Lucid dreaming and language learning is something that is often discussed and it is quite an interesting concept. The reality is that you wouldn’t be able to learn anything new but you could practice your language skills when dreaming.
However, this is a lot easier said than done.

What Is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid dreaming is a pretty crazy phenomenon. It is basically when you are having a dream and are able to realise that this is what is happening.
Since you are consciously aware that you are dreaming, you can start to control things in the dream, and as it’s a dream you can do anything that you could possibly imagine.
Not everyone has experienced this, but those who have will instantly try and do some crazy stuff like start flying around and a million other things that are usually humanly impossible when awake.
However, there are some people who can do this quite regularly and they use this dream time to practice things that they do in real life, usually physically skills, but also mental skills, such as practicing a language they are learning.

How Do You Lucid Dream?
Actually making yourself lucid dream is pretty hard to achieve. A lot of people do it by accident and then start looking into how to do it again. There are also a lot of people say that it doesn’t exist as they can’t get it to work.
Personally I have not being able to do it, but I am very certain it is real. There are a number of different ways you can try and do it and a quick search online, or on youtube will give you plenty of results showing you how.
There are a lot of people out there teaching how to do it, so try a few techniques out and see how you do.
It is something you will need to be patient with and try for a while before getting it right, but hopefully you can unlock this crazy experience.
How Can Lucid Dreaming Be Used For Language Learning?
Once you get into a state of lucid dreaming you can do anything you can imagine, which means some crazy things, or something a lot simpler, like practicing your language.
The only issue with lucid dreaming is that you can only use the information that is already in your head, this means you can only dream about things that you can personally imagine, or in the case of language learning, things you have already experienced.
You would not be able to learn a new language from scratch while a sleep, but you could certainly strengthen the knowledge you do already have and you could practice what you already know.
Lucid dreaming is really just being conscious, while unconscious. Anything you can do in your mind while awake, you could do while dreaming.
You could imagine up a friend and you could have a conversation with them or just keep it simple and practice going over some verbs. Really you can practice anything you want, so long as you can imagine doing it, you can.
Your Subconscious Is Still Processing Things While You Sleep
The whole process of dreaming is believed to be your subconscious sorting out the new information it has received through the day. This is from everything in life, not just your language learning. This is why your dreams are often filled with events from the previous day, you are sorting going through everything and processing it.
When you are lucid dreaming the link between your subconscious and conscious are pretty close as both are active at the same time, which means all sorts of information will be going back and forth and being processed.
Lucid dreaming can almost be like you are consciously deciding what your subconscious should process, as well as being very aware that this is happening.
It’s a very unique and strange thing and we have to assume it has the same benefit as normal dreams, if not more since as we are directing what is being processed and are potentially focusing on it more than what would happen naturally.
What If You Make A Mistake When Learning A Language In A Lucid Dream?
The big question that arises is usually around mistakes and what happens if you do that will practicing in a dream. The truth is this is no different to when you are awake.
It is probably going to happen and you probably will not realise, but it’s not the end of the world.
Usually when you are awake you can double check things, but you may not always do this, you may just try and run though some things you mind and leave it at that.
This is what will happen when you are lucid dreaming. You might remember something slightly wrong and while it’s annoying, it should not affect you too negatively over all.
Studying The Effects Of Lucid Dreaming Is Difficult
The main problem with lucid dreaming is that it a hard thing to study, especially its benefits.
It seems like it can be helpful, you are getting an extra practice session in while you sleep, but there is no real way to measure if this is actually helpful or if it just feels that way.
Either way it does you no harm. If you are able to lucid dream then give it a go, if you can’t lucid dream, well you will just have normal dreams and your brain will still be processing things this way
The important thing to remember is that your brain needs rest to help it recover, so as long as you are sleeping enough, you are helping your language skills regardless of the type of dreams you are having.
Should You Lucid Dream To Try And Study A Language?
If you want to try it and are interested in the concept, then sure why not try it.
However, it’s not easy to achieve and when you do, you may want to try other things such as testing out your superpowers. Although if you ever get bored of that you could certainly try and practice some language skills instead.
If you think it is some way to get ahead in your language, you might be right, but the reality is that you will be able to do much more while you are awake and this is also much easier to achieve, so honestly it might just be best to stick with this.
