Example Sentences

There are three main meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner and often people have a dessert after their dinner as a sweet treat. British people do eat food from all over the world, but I will only be talking about British food here.

A traditional breakfast in Britain is a fry up, or cooked breakfast. This is fried eggs, bacon, sausage and usually there are also beans, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast. This meal is very filling and will give you a lot of energy. It is quite unhealthy as everything is fried, but it is delicious.

A more common breakfast is cereal with milk, or porridge oats. This can be quickly made and is both filling and delicious.

We also sometimes have a boiled egg. We cook it so that the yellow yolk inside is still runny and then we cut the top off and dip slices of toast in to it. The cut toast is called “soldiers” as we say it looks like a line of soldiers standing to attention. This is a very simple breakfast, but it is great.

Nearly every one drinks tea or coffee with breakfast. You can drink these throughout the day, but it is good in the morning to help you wake up.

At lunch time we usually have a small meal, which is quite often sandwiches. They are cheap and easy to make. You can also by them ready made and ready to go in lots of shops and supermarkets.

A lot of our shops have a “meal deal” where you can get a sandwich, a drink and a packet of crisps at a reduced price if you buy them together. These are a very popular lunch as they are so convenient and cheap.

Sandwiches can also be eaten with your hands, so they are good for taking to work, or when you are out and about. This is also true for pies and pasties which are just meat and vegetables wrapped in pastry.

A Scotch egg was also made for this reason. This is an egg wrapped in sausage meat and then breadcrumbs. It can sound strange, but it is a tasty snack and it one of my favourites.

If you are at home you can a quick and easily meal of beans on toast. This looks very simple, but it is great and worth trying.

A Baked potato is also common too, which is just a large potato that is cooked in the oven until cooked and then it is topped with things like cheese, or beans. It is very filling and actually something I usually have for dinner.

A lot of British dinners contain meat, potatoes and vegetables.

On Sundays we like to have a roast dinner, which will be roast potatoes and vegetables, with either Roast Beef or Roast Chicken.

We also like to have mash potatoes and sausages, which we call Bangers and Mash as when we used to fry sausages in a pan, they would pop and make a “bang” sound.

We also have a similar dish, where the sausages are cooked in a batter, to make a sort of pie, which we call Toad In The Hole and we often serve this with mash potato.

We also have Shepherd’s pie which is layer of minced beef or lamb topped with mashed potato. In Ireland, we have Irish stew, which is different vegetables and potatoes slowly cooked together in a gravy with chunks of beef or lamb. This meal is excellent. The English have a similar dish where the meat and vegetables are cooked and then topped with a layer of sliced potatoes, which they call a Lancaster Hot Pot.

Probably the most famous British dish is Fish and chips, which is usually served with mushy peas. This usually bought from a shop and is a great meal you can eat by the seaside on a summers day.

If you still have room in your stomach after dinner, you might want a dessert, which is a sweet treat.

We like to eat cake, but we also have sticky toffee pudding, which is kind of like a type of cake, but more dense and sticky. It is wonderful.

We also have crumbles, which is a layer of fruits, such as apples, that are then topped with a layer of …crumble…which is really butter and flower mixed together to form crumbs and then the whole thing is baked.

All of these desserts can be served with custard, which is a sweet yellow sauce that is just wonderful and it can be eaten hot or cold. It really does make everything better.
