Example Sentences -例文
On the 5th November in England there are fireworks and bonfires to remember the gunpowder plot of 1605.
This was when Guy Fawkes (the face of the anonymous masks) tried to blow up the British government in the parliament buildings of Westminster.
He was a catholic, and wanted to kill the protest king (James 1) his plan was to put lots of explosives in the basement and then blow it up when everyone was inside. However, he was caught and killed for treason.
Because the plan failed, and the king survived, people started lighting bonfires to celebrate. This then became a law that every year we had to remember this as a day of “thanksgiving” and this is still celebrated today.
It is celebrating the failure and the fact that it didn’t blow up, some people get confused and wrongly think we are celebrating that Guy tried to do this.
However, on this night in England you will see still fireworks and bonfires and it is generally a fun night for everyone.
