Example Sentences -例文
Most people live in an apartment as they are small and close to the city, but many people also live in houses.
Everyone wants to live near a bus stop so they can easily travel. Usually in the city centre you will find the bus station and the train station. One of these will take you to the airport.
If you need to eat you can go to a restaurant or café. There will also be many shops on the streets in the city where you can buy things. If you want to drink beer then you have to go a pub.
You might be able to buy a lot of what you need from the convince store /corner shop /newsagents. However, these shops are small, and you will find a bigger selection at the super market.
You can buy bread in the bakery, meat at the butchers and fish from the fishmonger.
If you want to buy furniture for your house, you will go to Ikea, but you can also visit 2nd hand shops that well sell things like furniture and clothes at a very cheap price. You can also go to the 100 yen store to buy cheap things.
Shops are not the only buildings you will find in the city, there is also cinemas where you can watch movies, gyms for exercise and the library, where you can borrow books. If you have a problem with your car, you can take it to a mechanic. In America they say “the car is in the shop”, in Britain we just say the car is at the mechanics or at the garage.
Cities will also have a swimming pool (and they will have onsins if you are in Japan). If you are feeling unwell you can visit the pharmacy/ chemist to buy some medicine.
If you want to buy a new house you will go to the estate agents and if you need to send letters you will go to the post office. If you want to deal with your money, you need to go the bank.
A lot of the buildings in a city are owned by business’ and are offices where salarymen go to work.
Cities will also have other buildings like churches and places you can park your car, which the Americans call a “parking lot”, and the British call a “car park”. These will be protected by cameras, which you will also find all over the city.
A lot of cities have a big clock so everyone can see the time. These are always at bus station and train station, but sometimes they are just in the city centre, like Big Ben in London.
All cities will have people who keep us safe and help us when there is trouble or a disaster. The police station is there to fight crime and the fire station will come and save us when there is a fire.
If you get sick, you will be taken to the hospital.
You will also find a lot of schools for children in the city. You might even find an English school for adults, as well as a university for students to study.
Cities are not just buildings; they also have areas you can relax, such as parks. These are full of trees and usually a pond with fish and ducks. There will be lots of benches here so you can sit down and look at the view.
Cities are also very often near a big river and you will find many bridges going across.
If you live in a very old city, there may be an old castle you can visit and there will also be statues that show famous people from history. There will also be other monuments in cities, usually to remember the dead, especially soldiers. Cities will also have graveyards, where the dead people are buried.
The main city of a country is called the capital city. The capital city of England is London and the capital city of Japan is Tokyo.
Cities are usually big, if you live somewhere smaller, it is probably a town. If where you live is very small, maybe only a 100 houses, it is a village.
To connect cities, you drive your car along the motorway, which is the main road. Some cities are beside the sea and ships can come to the city. A city like this will have a bay, where the ships can come into, such as Tokyo bay.
